Its leaders and activists have primarily been village women, acting to save their means of subsistence and their communities. The chipko movement or chipko andolan, was a forest conservation movement in india.it began in 1973 in uttarakhand, then a part of uttar pradesh (at the foothills of himalayas) and went on to become a rallying point for many future environmental movements all over the world.

Sometimes it managed to replant trees in areas close to village homes. The chipko movement was the result of hundreds of decentralised and locally autonomous initiatives. Sunderlal bahuguna (born 9 january 1927) is a noted garhwali environmentalist and chipko movement leader.

Along with 84 villagers, they risked their lives to protect the forest trees from being cut down on the order of the king. The name of the movement comes from a word meaning “embrace”: The word ‘chipko’ means ‘embrace’, as the villagers hugged the trees that prevented the loggers from cutting them.

The ‘save thano‘ protesters also took their protest out of the forest to the jolly grant airport, for the authorities to hear them loud and clear. One of the strongest movements to conserve forests in india. In 1987 chipko was chosen for a “right to livelihood award,” known as the “alternate nobel” prize honor.

Where the villagers hug the trees, saving them by interposing their bodies between them and the contractors’. The idea of chipko movement was of his wife and the action was taken by him.

Since then, the movement has spread to many states in the country.
